Origiinal green cloth, titled in gilt on spine, with gilt pictorial device to front cover; xxiii,360pp; frontispiece and 39 leaves of photographic plates (halftones) not reckoned in pagination; large folding map. Faint call number inked in white at base of spine; numerous blind-embossed stamps of the N.Y. State Traveling Library (defunct), with red ink "withdrawn" stamp at base of dedication leaf; remnants from removed bookplate to front pastedown. Despite markings, a sound, complete copy including the folding map; Good or better. With the ownership signature of African-American historian and educator Adelaide Cromwell (1919-2019) on front free endpaper.
