A novel about the creation of the atom bomb: "the story of three top U.S. scientists engaged before 1940 in nuclear physics, and of how they were drawn . . . into making the bomb during the war and were persuaded to assent to its use" (1959 Review by V. S. Pritchett). Buck was the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Raised in China, she wrote extensively on Chinese and Asian culture.
