The "Genius" Theodore DREISER.

The "Genius"

New York: John Lane - The Bodley Head, 1915. First Edition. First printing. First state, with page 497 numbered and boards bulking to 1-3/4". Octavo (20cm). Red ribbed cloth, titled in gilt on spine, reverse-titled in gilt on front cover; 736pp. A tight, straight copy, with gilt still reasonably bright on spine; mild external rubbing and soil, a bit of dusting to text-block edges, but overall a clean, solidly Very Good example, lacking the uncommon dustwrapper.

Dreiser's seventh published work, and something of a succès de scandale. Roughly a year after its publication, The Genius came under attack by the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice, which succeeded in blocking John Lane Co. from printing or distributing any further copies. But, as Dreiser's bibliographer notes, the one-year head start the book enjoyed "...unquestionably accounts for the fact that this book, in spite of its subsequent suppression, is not very scarce." McDONALD 7.
