Contemporary full leather, gilt title on red spine label, blind roll to board edges; plain endpapers; 293,[3]pp; 2pp at rear announcing the publication by subscription of an edition of Bunyan's works; with frontispiece portrait and 21 full-page line engravings. With printed directions to binder at rear. Contemporary corrections to some plate numbers. Sound and complete with general moderate wear, both hinges repaired, minor tear and repair to upper right corner of frontispiece, small tear to pl. 4 just affecting plate area, pages lightly rubbed with minor foxing: Good or better.

Uncommon illustrated Edinburgh edition, with plates copied from an earlier London edition of Bunyan's works printed by W. Johnston and E. and C. Dilly (see ESTC T58778). Frontispiece portrait (and possibly other plates) engraved by Hector Gavin, an Edinburgh engraver active between 1766-1820. A curious entry in the long history of Bunyan's ever-popular allegory, and in the history of Scottish publishing. ESTC records 3 copies, none in the US. ESTC T182220.
