John Altgeld (1847-1902), a Progressive Democrat, was the 20th Governor of Illinois, from 1893-1897. He supported labor interests, signing laws on workplace safety and child labor and refusing to break the Pullman strike. This book includes chapters on strikes, "Pensions for Soldiers," "The Abolition of Constables," and "The Eight-Hour Movement."
