Orange-tan pictorial cloth, titled in gilt on spine; cover title and decorative elements stamped in silver and dark brown; 434pp; frontispiece, 15 leaves of inserted plates (one folding); two folding maps, numerous text illustrations and diagrams. Thin crack to front hinge (holding); an area of conspicuous spotting to rear board, else just mild external rubbing and soil; still a sturdy, complete, Very Good copy. With ownership signature and engraved bookplate of a William Mitchell, datemarked Bombay, March 14th, 1901.

Substantial first-hand observer's account of Islamic culture in the Middle East, by an American Reformed Church missionary who gained the sobriquet "The Apostle to Islam" for many years of service in Bahrain, Yemen, and other regions of the Arabic world. Zwemer was an impressively prolific author, publishing more than fifty books between 1900 and 1951; the current title is his first full-length work. Illustrated throughout with photographic plates and numerous facsimiles, musical and textual examples, and maps. The title appears to have been issued simultaneously in England and America (the American publisher was Fleming Revell).
