Bottome's fourth work of fiction, a psychological study of a child of the slums who, following a patricide, a stint in prison and then a somewhat improbable Oxford education, goes on to organize striking dockworkers in London. Bottome was a disciple of Alfred Adler in Vienna; in 1924 she and her husband founded an international school in Austria where Ian Fleming was a pupil.
