On Political Economy, in Connexion with the Moral State and Moral Prospects of Society

Columbus, OH: Isaac N. Whiting, 1833. Second American edition. 12mo (20cm). Original purple cloth, titled in gilt on leather spine label, with paper label above; plain endpapers; [i]-viii [9] 10-443, [1]pp. Provenance inscription to front pastedown, stamps of Dickinson College Library to title page and final leaf. A straight, sound copy, rubbed, sunned at spine and board edges, lacking both free endleaves, with some foxing: Good or better. Chalmers argued that the only remedy for poverty (which he believed was created by overpopulation) would be "to improve the character of the people through religious and moral instruction," which "could be achieved only through the parish churches and schools"--an idea "received with considerable disdain by leading political economists and Liberal politicians" (ODNB). KRESS C3438.
