Sumner delivered this speech in 1860, on his first return to the Senate after his assault by Brooks. This edition, published midway through the Civil War and after the Emancipation Proclamation, includes a new dedication "To the Young Men of the United States. . . in token of heartfelt gratitude to them for brave and patriotic service rendered in the present War for Civilization" (iii).
