With a list of 18 existing Shaker communities. First written to contest a bill in the New York legislature, but later published as a way to introduce Shakers "in their proper character, as citizens of the Commonwealth, and under the influence and operation of its laws" and to "solve the many questions proposed by the religious world, concerning these singular people, as a religious community" ([2]). First edition published in 1830 (SABIN 79696), and frequently reprinted; this edition revised by Calvin Green before publication. RICHMOND 740.
