Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1900. Twenty-three octavo volumes. Uniformly bound in publisher's white buckram with paper spine labels. Limited to 500 sets, each signed by Rose Hawthorne Lathrop on limitation leaf of first volume; gravure frontispieces signed in pencil by various artists (see below). Bindings somewhat toned and soiled, with occasional foxing to cloth; spine label of final volume (Woodberry's biography of Hawthorne) is slightly darkened. Contents fine and complete, texts mostly unopened. A solidly Very Good set overall, with all 22 signed frontispieces present and in fine condition.

A lavish bibliophile edition of Hawthorne, complete with 22 pencil-signed gravure frontispieces by 21 different illustrators. These include (by order of volume appearance): Anna Whelan Betts, Emlen McConnell, Sarah S. Stilwell, Jessie Willcox Smith, Mary Ayer, Eric Pape, Maude A. Cowles, B. Yohn, Albert Herter, Harry Fenn, Childe Hassam, Edmund H. Garrett, Jules Guérin, and Ross Turner. The set was sold by subscription, offered in a variety of bindings and issues, some including additional suites of plates, signed documents, or manuscript leaves.
