New York: Harper and Brothers, 1853. First American Edition. First printing. First issue, bound from the parts. 12mo (19cm) in two volumes. Half black morocco with brown marbled paper covered boards, titled in gilt on spines, all edges sprinkled red; pale red-brown endpapers; vol. I: [ii], [vii]-xvi, [1]-432pp; vol. II: [ii], [433]-936pp; frontispiece portrait of Dickens after Maclise, engraved by T. Philybrowne, and 37 illustrations after Hablot K. Browne ("Phiz"), reengraved on wood by Lossing-Barritt. Tight, straight bindings, rubbed at edges and drying out on spines, hinges of vol. I and rear hinge of vol. II cracked through; internally foxed; plates clean of foxing, but browned: still, a square, clean copy: Good or better.

With most of the points listed in Smith, but with some page numbers and the E on p.533 not damaged. Bound from the parts (stab-holes visible), though without wrappers: vol. I includes chapters 1-29 (parts 1-9), which does not correspond to the division of chapters in the book issue, and lacks the dedication leaf (which was not issued with other prelims in part 19/20).
