Hb in maroon buckram, stamped in gold on front and spine; [1]-[10], [i]-xviii 19-456pp. With reproductions of the original frontispiece portrait and in-text diagrams. Clean and straight, with one or two bumps to edges, else Near Fine.

Root managed and worked in daguerreotype studios in Philadelphia, Mobile, New Orleans, Saint Louis, and New York from 1843 to 1857. The Camera and the Pencil is an important early work about photographic aesthetics--"a bold attempt to establish photography as a fine art" (Newhall).
