Winning at Independent Political Action: Bernard Sanders, Socialist Mayor of Burlington Vermont...

[Los Angeles: Peace & Freedom Party, 1986]. Campaign flyer, photocopied recto-only on a sheet of white copier bond. Slightly wrinkled, with mild creasing to corners; Very Good.

Promotes a lecture by Bernie Sanders, described as "The Socialist Mayor of Burlington Vermont," who at this time was running for the Vermont governorship. Sponsoring groups included the Unitarian Church; Democratic Socialists of America; Solidarity; and the Peace & Freedom Party. The flyer text spotlights Sanders's success at garnering working-class votes as a Socialist candidate; notes Burlington's "sister city" status with Puerta Cabezas, Nicaragua and the "tremendous amount of material aid to Puerta Cabezas" provided under the Sanders administration; and notes the endorsement of Sanders by the Rainbow Coalition and Jesse Jackson. Though the lecture is presented as an independent event with Sanders as "Keynote" speaker, one supposes that the Sanders gubernatorial campaign would not have turned down cash contributions from California progressives. This was Sanders's third attempt at the Vermont governorship, and like the previous two it proved unsuccessful. He would enter the national political arena two years later, as a member of Congress, and has served continuously in one or another branch of Congress ever since.
