In original green publisher's cloth, stamped in gold and black with nautical/pirate-themed design by Margaret Armstrong; plain endpapers; 4pp of ads at rear; [iii-viii], 314pp; with 8 full-page halftones by A. Forestier. An externally bright copy with only minimal rubbing to cloth, but lacking front free endpaper and one leaf of prelims, with resultant thin crack to front hinge at gutter (webbing just exposed, but holding): Good or better.

Stockton was one of the most popular authors in late nineteenth-century America, though he is nearly forgotten today--a contrast to Margaret Armstrong, whose reputation has grown (ANB). BAL 18923. GULLANS & ESPEY 250.
