In original red cloth, stamped in gold and silver with crossed swords on front board; titled in gold on spine; plain endpapers; [ii], [1-2] 3-5 [6] 9-278pp; with 8 halftone illustrations by John Sloan. A clean, straight copy in beautiful condition, apart from the sunned spine and half-inch perforation to rear endpaper by gutter: Very Good+.

Crane collaborated with Kate Lyon on this book (ANB). She is reputed to have done much of the research and some of the writing. The mistress of author Harold Frederic, Lyon socialized with Stephen and Cora Crane when they lived in Surrey at the turn of the century, and Cora supported Lyon when she was charged with manslaughter after Frederic's death. (She was acquitted.)

John Sloan was a member of the Socialist Party from 1910-14, an unsuccessful Socialist candidate for the New York State Assembly, and the art editor of The Masses from 1912-16. This is one of the first books he illustrated in a long career in the art world (ANB). STALLMAN 30. BAL 4094.
