Novels and Tales by Maria Edgeworth. Harper's Stereotype Edition. Twenty Volumes, Bound in Ten
New York: Harper and Brothers, 1832-33-34. Together, ten 12mo volumes (18cm); uniformly bound in 19th-c. half-calf over marbled boards. Vols. I-IX issued with engraved frontispieces and engraved title pages; Vol X, issued later but bound uniformly, with printed title page and no frontispiece. Mild crazing to spine-leather on about half of the volumes; mild erosion to crown and front joint of vol. X; still a firm, complete, and attractive set. Contemporary ownership signature to each volume of a John Rand; later (20th-c.) private ink stamp of H.H. Roche; vol. I with engraved bookplate of Francis Massey O'Brien.
See American Imprints #12258 for the first nine volumes, dated 1832-33; #18661 for an 1833 edition of the first nine volumes; and #24271 for an 1834 edition, 20 volumes in 10. In our set the first two volumes are 1832; volumes three through nine are 1833; and the tenth volume is 1834 – these are likely the earliest dates of each volume of the Harper's Stereotype Edition. A scarce set.
