Elegant Extracts. A Copious Selection of Instructive, Moral, and Entertaining Passages, from the Most Eminent Prose Writers

New York: Kirk & Mercein, 1818. First American Edition. Six 16mo volumes (14.5cm). Full contemporary tree calf, with leather labels and gilt spine decorations. Twelve books in six volumes (as issued), as follows: I. Books 1 & 2: Religious. II. Books 3 & 4: Perceptive, Classical. III. Books 5 & 6: Orations and Harangues - Parliamentary Speeches. IV. Books 7 & 8: Historical - Characters - Dialogues. V. Books 9 & 10: Narrative - Humorous and Satirical. VI. Books 11 & 12: Miscellaneous - Chronology, &c. Each volume with engraved extra-title. Occasional foxing and staining to text; brief chips to crowns of two volumes; v. 1 front hinge stressed, with thin crack at lower third, but holding. Attractive and complete, in a quite elegant contemporary American binding. Gift inscription to half-title of v.1: "To Susan A. Weems from M.L. Weems," undated but apparently contemporary. By comparison with known examples, we do not believe this inscription to be in the hand of Mason Locke (aka "Parson") Weems.

The scarce first American edition of Knox's prose miscellany, first published in London in 1783. OCLC notes scattered locations, many appearing to be incomplete upon closer examination. AMERICAN IMPRINTS 43921 (listing only three volumes).
