Memoir of Julia Sophia Davis, Who Died at Worcester, March 31, 1833

Worcester: Dorr, Rowland & Co., 1833. First Edition. 16mo. Contemporary sheep over boards; [4];viii,[13]-62pp; portrait frontispiece. Some pencil graffiti to margins and endpapers; scattered light foxing; still a tight, attractive copy in a contemporary binding, Very Good. Gift inscription on second blank: "Will sister Jane accept this from her brother Halsey Kelley," undated but apparently contemporary with publication.

Moral tale for young readers, recounting (mostly in her own words) the final days on earth of a young Massachusetts girl, whose cheerful fixation on the coming joys of the afterlife provide, in the words of the editor, "an unusually interesting exhibition of youthful piety." An exemplar of the morbid-romantic strain in mid-19th-c. American letters. Uncommon.

Price: $150.00
