The New York City "Ring": Its Origin, Maturity, and Fall, Discussed in a Reply to the New York Times

At the time of publication Samuel Jones Tilden was a member of the New York State Assembly whose efforts as a member of the Committee of Seventy were largely responsible for the downfall of the corrupt New York City Mayor William M. Tweed and his "Tweed Ring." In part thanks to this Tilden, after serving just one term on the state assembly, was elected Governor of New York, in 1874.
