Lacking white glazed wrappers called for in BAL, spine perished and first and final leaves separated but present, stock exceedingly brittle with chipping along extremities, never quite approaching text, old horizontal fold with some brief splitting. Good at best. Lengthy poem described by the author in a letter to James T. Fields as "[A] bit of Western talk" ("The Life and Letters of John Hay" (1915), Vol. 1, p. 372). BAL 7741 and 7734.
