Reed was a leading exponent of Swedenborgianism in the United States, and an important early influence upon the Transcendentalists and especially Ralph Waldo Emerson. Geldard (God in Concord; NY: 1999) in fact refers to Reed as "...the John the Baptist of Transcendentalism, and his Observations his call to 'Make Way.'" SHOEMAKER 25905.
