Paper first delivered by the inventor and electrical engineer before the American Association for the Advancement of Science, August 23, 1898, on the discovery of a gas the author named "etherion." "[P]resumably elementary...It is a constituent of the atmosphere, and is occluded by many substances. Its chief characteristic thus far ascertained, is enormous heat conductivity at low pressures" (p. 1). Two years later the Polish physicist Marian Smoluchowski identified the gas as water vapor. U.
