New Developments: Including the Grange, Anti-Monopoly, Farmers' Alliance, Co-operative Fire Insurance, and the Economic Barn, to which is added an Account of Artificial Butter

In addition to articles on contemporary economic and social reforms, includes a quite early description of oleomargarine, first invented by a French chemist in 1869 but not widely patented in the U.S. until the 1880s. The author introduces the topic in order to draw the distinction between "poisonous" margarine and genuine butter, and concludes that "...it is easy to understand why men can be found who will make and sell such compounds, but what must be thought of American citizens who submit to be fed on such a product of modern science and modern civilization."
