Nihon no Sekijuji; Japanese Red Cross [Text primarily Japanese, with some English]

Tokyo: Nihon Sekijuji-sha, 1958. Later printing. Heavy quarto (30cm); dark red cloth, stamped in white and gilt, slipcover presumed missing; pictorial endpapers; 269pp. Rubbing and material chipping to extremities, with very small gouges along lower rear edge; cloth "bubbled" on rear board; mild wear and soiling. Textblock edges soiled (especially top); interiors toned with some offsetting and light foxing throughout. Overall Very Good, rare.

Editions of this book were published throughout the 1950's by the Japanese Red Cross Society (Nihon Sekijuji), in hopes of promoting the organization and a better understanding of its purpose in the new postwar, non-Imperial Japan. Mainly it is a memorial album, packed with b/w photo-illustrations pertaining to the Japanese Red Cross, its volunteers, activities and disaster relief efforts, plus special events and campaigns, including those relating to post-WW2 reparations. International Red Cross societies and campaigns are also featured.

Text portions of the book cover the history of the Japanese Red Cross and its laws and mission, organizational data and more. While the text is primarily in Japanese, most pictures have English captions, and the introductory messages by former PM Ichiro Hatoyama and (then) Japanese Red Cross Society president Tadatsugu Shimadzu have also been translated into English.
