The presentation copy, the dedication page "to Ben Shahn" followed by the author's inscription "from Tom / Sept. '64." Additionally with Bernarda Shahn's pencil ownership signature to front free endpaper. From the library of Ben and Bernarda Shahn with their estate label tipped to front pastedown.

Collection of three lengthy short stories, each based on recent current events involving voyages in isolation. The author worked at the Office of War Information during World War II, presumably where he would have first made the acquaintance of the artist Ben Shahn. Whiteside later worked as a journalist for "The New Yorker" and is today best remembered for his series of articles on of the use of "Agent Orange" during the Vietnam War, which directly led to Senate hearings on the dangers of the substance.
