Philadelphia: for the Author, N.d. [ca 1887?]. First Edition. Octavo (21cm). Cloth boards, lettered in gilt on spine and front cover; 252pp. Attractive, tight, VG or better copy, free of markings or significant wear.

Vignettes from the life of a dry-goods merchant, a long-time resident of both Providence (1811-1830) and Philadelphia (1830-87). In addition to many useful insights on the history of the dry-goods trade, includes a grisly eye-witness account of the celebrated murder of fourteen-year-old Peter Doescher by his playmate, Gottlieb Williams, the son of a pork butcher, on the streets of Philadelphia in 1844. Also a quite lengthy and detailed chapter on the musical culture of Philadelphia in the mid-19th century.
