Novel about two slaves who are sold to a sadistic slave owner during the early 1800's, one who seeks hard labor from the men and sex from the women. Basis for the 1969 film directed by Herbert Biberman - one of the Hollywood Ten - starring Stephen Boyd as the plantation owner, Ossie Davis as the slave who starts a rebellion, and Dionne Warwick as the plantation owner's mistress.
