Cautionary temperance tale (aren't they all?) following the exploits of Mr. B, who is first introduced to us in the little village of H. as the drunkard husband of beleaguered Mrs. B. After a night of boozy brawling, followed by his wife's brush with death, Mr. B makes his way to New York City, where, after another bout of heavy drinking and passing out on a dock, he makes his way onto a London-bound packet as a member of the crew. Descriptions of London and a journey to South America conclude with Mr. B's promotion to Captain. WRIGHT I 1013.
