Chicago: Muhammad's Mosque/Temple No.2, 1968. First Edition. Though statements from within the Nation of Islam are often conflicting, it is generally accepted that Malcolm X founded the weekly Muhammad Speaks in 1961. A long-running and entirely independent periodical (even of advertisers) which would become the official publishing organ of the NOI. The publication focused primarily on general news of Muslim interest, articles relevant to the Black community, with national and international news covering Africa and much of the Muslim world. Elijah Muhammad, who contributed frequent columns to the newspaper, envisioned it as a valuable "re-education tool" for the Black community, one that would propagate the views of the NOI across a broad spectrum of Black readership. Tabloid (39cm); illustrated newsprint wrappers; 36pp; illus. Light wear and toning to extremities, small ink mark to inner front wrapper, a few faint creases and several tears, else Very Good+.
