Boston: E.P. Peabody, 1841. First Edition. Distinguished copy, with provenance of two important collectors, of this scarce Hawthorne work – the second volume in his juvenile trilogy The Whole History of Grandfather's Chair (later issued together in one volume, 1851). Depending on authority, this is either the second printing (see BAL 7592b) or second edition (see Clark A8.2a). In the descriptive catalogue of his collection, Wilson writes of this copy: "A. Edward Newton's copy of the second issue, with his bookplate. It is the text of the first issue, and not of the second, which persists in later printings, which made me doubful of the accepted priority, and determined to have both" (see Wilson, Thirteen Author Collections, 1950). 16mo (13cm). Original publisher's brown ribbed cloth with printed paper label to front cover; 160pp. Binding uniformly faded, with spot of staining to front cover below title; thin crack to cloth at upper 1/2" of front joint. Internally clean and tight, with bookplates of both A. Edward Newton and Carroll A. Wilson. Earlier bookplate of J. Harson Purdy and partial remnant of a clipped auction listing adhered to front pastedown. Good or better.
