Textiles of the Japanese Zodiac

[Columbus, OH: by the Author, 2004]. First, Limited Edition. Edition of five copies. Hand-made oblong silk-over-boards folio, ca 13" x 18-1/2"; sewn binding; sixteen unnumbered leaves. Twelve hand-colored solar plate etchings, approximately 8" x 11" within plate marks on 11" x 14" sheet, each sheet mounted to a rice-paper leaf with a facing page of ink-jet printed text. The prints are hand-signed in pencil lower right, each numbered 1/5. Fine condition in a slightly soiled slipcase of matching silk over boards.

A collection of fanciful images based on the Japanese zodiac, each depicting a character from the zodiac engaged in some aspect of traditional Japanese textile design. Keiko Okamoto is a Japanese illustrator, printmaker, fabric designer and textile artist, a graduate of the Women's College of Fine Arts, Tokyo and Ohio State University. Her textile designs were featured in the 1998 MoMA exhibition Structure and Surface: Contemporary Japanese Textiles.
