The Soul of the World

Pasadena: Equitist Publishing House, 1909. First Edition. 12mo (18cm). Publisher's red cloth boards, lettered in white on spine and front cover; 428,(2)pp. Lettering mostly rubbed away on spine; front endpaper neatly removed, else a tight, Very Good copy.

A fictional romance of the Single Tax movement, set in California, written by the wife of one of the movement's primary spokesmen Warren E. Brokaw. The Soul of the World received predictably favorable reviews within the Single Tax press, but appears never to have found its way into the heart of a larger audience. Bachman was deaf from birth and died young from what is described in her obituary as "progressive paralysis." SMITH B-31. Missed by Hanna and not in Baird (California Fiction). Scarce in commerce; about a dozen verifiable copies in U.S. institutions.

Price: $200.00
