[New York]: Pantheon, (but 1950). First American Edition. Originally published by Longmans in 1939, At Swim-Two-Birds was a commercial failure with less than 240 copies sold by the outbreak of the war; subsequently Longmans' London premises and all unsold copies with it were destroyed in the Blitz in 1940. The novel was rediscovered and republished in this 1950 New York edition, only afterward achieving fame as one of the great comic masterpieces of 20th-century literature. Octavo (20cm.); original cloth-backed boards in yellow decorative dust jacket; 315pp. Mild dusting to textblock edges, jacket spine just a half-shade darkened and a brief (3/4") split to paper at base of rear flap-fold, where there is also a small, darkish stain; Near Fine in Very Good, unclipped jacket. A quite presentable copy.
