This, together with its predecessor The Wonderful Adventures of Nils, would become Lagerlöf's most popular and enduring work. Lagerlöf was the first female author and first Swede to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1909. Scarce in dustjacket. First Printing. Octavo (20cm); light brown cloth, with titling and decorations stamped in white, dark yellow, and hunter green on spine and front cover; dustjacket; x,339pp; frontispiece and 14 plates of illustrations. Brief contemporary (1914) pencil inscription to front endpaper, spine ends gently nudged, with rubbing to white spine lettering, else a fresh, Near Fine copy. Dustjacket is lightly edgeworn and gently spine-sunned, with some dustiness to panels, a few small chips to upper edge, several tears, and a few small moisture stains to spine; Very Good.
