Tropic Death features "stories and sketches of poor blacks in the West Indies and Panama, reflecting the speech, rhythm, and myths that exist among a people faced with starvation, drought, and racial problems" (Perry, Margaret. The Harlem Renaissance: An Annotated Bibliography and Commentary, 504). After emmigrating to the United States, Walrond became a noted author, editor, and Harlem Renaissance figure, becoming deeply involved with the UNIA and the National Urban League.
