Amsterdam: Autonomen '80, Autonomia Operaia Paesi Bassi; MAF; Noordelijk Terreurfront, [1985]. Original pictorial poster (61x45cm.) printed offset in purple on white stock; crease and subsequent wrinkling to right-hand edge, additional edge wear, else Good or better.

Poster issued on the occasion of Pope Paul II's visit to the Netherlands in May, 1985, in which several radical organizations attempted to incite an assassination, the present poster depicting a photograph of the Pope complete with swastika and seemingly in the middle of giving a far right salute, his head in crosshairs. The Pope's visit to the Lowlands was one of the most unpopular of his international visits in the early years of his papacy. A contemporary poll found that the majority of Dutch catholics disagreed with the Church's rulings on abortion, birth control, divorce, priestly celibacy, and the ban on the ordination of women to the priesthood, inciting protests leading up to the visit. (See the Chicago Tribune, May 10, 1985). OCLC locates 2 copies as of October, 2016, Yale only in North America.
