Girard, KS: 1900. Attractive original artwork for a cover of J.A. Wayland's Socialist journal One Hoss Philosophy. This issue features Edward Bellamy's "Parable of the Water Tank," the cover illustration depicting two bedraggled workers pouring water from their tiny buckets into the massive water tank of a fat cigar-smoking capitalist type. Lockwood was himself a political cartoonist, publisher, pamphleteer, and Socialist Party Organizer, best known for publishing the journals "The Billy Goat" and "Unity." Original pen-and-ink illustration (28.5x18.5cm.) in blue and black pencil and black ink on artist's board. A bit soiled, minor wear along extremities from handling, else Very Good. Signed by the artist at bottom left-hand corner.
