Howes was an 1896 Harvard Law School graduate; he practiced law in Boston and rose to prominence as a leading expert in estate and trust law, authoring the present work as well as serving as the editor for numerous later editions of J.W. Perry's standard A Treatise on the Law of Trusts and Trustees.
