History of Martha Berry (1866-1942), founder in 1902 of the Berry School and later the Berry Junior College at Mount Berry, Georgia, where "There are estimated to be a million illiterate or semi-literate white people in the mountains of Southern Appalachia, of the purest Anglo-Saxon stock which America can boast, who in their poverty and pride have been allowed to reitre, both physically and mentally into their mountain fastnesses" (p. 5). The still-extant Berry College was incorporated in 1983.
