Our Military Chaos: The Truth About Defense

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1939. First Edition. Octavo (20.5cm.); original cloth in red and blue dust jacket, black topstain; [10],202,xpp. A few short chips to jacket extremities, spine toned. Fine in About Very Good jacket.

A scathingly anti-war study of the American defense policy by former owner and editor of the Nation, a position Villard held from 1918 to 1935. Villard makes a number of arguments, claiming that the large funds being used in the U.S., France, and Great Britain towards armament are leading to Fascism, ignoring the fact that, at least with the latter two countries, these precautions were used to protect against the fascist state in Germany. Villard also denies the possibility of the U.S. entering a war with Japan ("because the countries are too far apart") and that "the United States is not in the slightest danger of attack or invasion." After Pearl Harbor Villard was obliged to eat his copy of this book. Scarce in dust jacket.
