The author's first book, a self-published novel about "The Derelicts, the Misfits, the Outcasts and Cheaters, and a Big-Time Swindle in the Dark Alleys of Los Angeles" (upper jacket panel). The author, galvanized by the Watts race riots in LA during which 34 people were killed, became involved in the Community Action Programs and served as Director of Voter Education and Registration for the NAACP. In 1968 she opened Soul Food Cafe in the southeast area of Los Angeles, on what is called "Skid Row," and this novel, narrated in the popular "street talk" of the neighborhood, is based on the locals who frequented her restaurant.
