The Power of Women and the Subversion of the Community: Women and the Subversion of the Community, by Mariarosa Dalla Costa; A Woman's Place, by Selma Jones [cover title]
Bristol, England: Falling Wall Press Ltd., [1973]. Second Edition. Octavo (20cm.); original magenta printed staplebound wrappers; [2],78pp. Fine. Seminal work co-authored by an Italian and an American-born Englishwoman, arguably launching the "domestic labor debate," in which Dalla Costa and James define housework as necessary labor, invisible by its removal from the wage-relation. Dalla Costa's essay was originally published in Italy as "Donne e sovversione sociale" in the journal Potere Femminile e Sovversione Sociale (1972). First published in the United States in Radical America the same year, the American proofs had a number of egregious errors which have been revised here. Additionally, this edition contains new material, and James's introduction has also been revised.
