Garden City: Doubleday & Company, 1969. Reissue; first edition under this title. Octavo (21.5cm). Reissue, under a new title, of Stegner's 1950 biographical novel The Preacher and the Slave, based on the life of legendary I.W.W. organizer and songwriter Joe Hill. The jacket copy makes clear the publisher's intent to market the novel to a new generation of radicalized baby-boomers, no doubt spurring the change in title and the timing of the reissue.
