Lewis's anti-clerical novel whose advance copies were sent to clergymen across the country as part of an exceedingly successful publicity stunt. PASTORE 13; COAN, p. 169; HANNA 2170. First issue with "Cantry" misprinted on cloth spine. Octavo (19.5cm.); original cloth in green decorative dust jacket printed in black and red; [8],432pp. Jacket extremities quite worn with several losses, the largest measuring approx. 1x1" at bottom edge of upper jacket panel affecting the "Le" in "Lewis," some minor tape repair to verso; narrow strip has been excised from blank of upper jacket flap; still, Very Good in Good or better jacket. Contemporary bookplate with text in Greek and Roman letters mounted to front pastedown.
