Bleak House

Contemporary armorial bookplate with two "C"s to front pastedown, presumably that of Sir James Clark, whose ownership inscription is on front free endpaper verso. Sir James Clark (1788-1870) was physician to Queen Victoria until his retirement in 1860. The inscription here bears Clark's pre-retirement address, at Brook Street. (See DNB IV, pp. 401-2.). Mixed issue. Octavo (22cm.); contemporary half red morocco over marbled boards, gilt spine in 6 compartments, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers; xvi,624pp.; frontispiece and added engraved title page, 38 plates. Boards a bit rubbed, spine leather darkened, some spotting throughout textblock, including to plates, else Very Good and sound, housed in custom cloth chemise and matching morocco-backed slipcase.
