Thompson was deeply involved in the Black Arts Movement, serving as editor of Umbra in the late 1960's; he would later change his name to Abba Elethea, continuing his work as a columnist, dance critic, and poet-in-residence at Antioch University (cf.Whitt. Short Stories of the Civil Rights Movement: An Anthology, p.4).
