Scarce pre-Civil War account of American prison life, with descriptions of the prisoners' daily routines and sketches of various criminals' careers. The author was Chaplain of Sing Sing State Prison from 1843-1856, a period during which a number of novel reforms were initiated at Sing Sing, including the practice of sorting criminals on the basis of phrenological diagnosis.
