Ellison's first novel, a picaresque romance of a young, starving artist on the road in the Great Depression. Ellison (1908-1981) would publish one more well-received novel ("The Dam," 1941), then went on to a long and distinguished career as a magazine editor and publisher. In 1946 he founded "Associated Magazine Contributors," a co-operative fiction venture whose co-owners included Steinbeck and Dos Passos. HANNA 1085.
