New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1912. First Edition. A scarce copy of Sinclair Lewis' pseudonymous debut, a juvenile novel about the adventures of a 16 year old hero fighting a villainous captain. Published in a single, small print run of 1,000 copies, and like many authors, Lewis' embarassment over his early effort caused him not to allow Hike to be reprinted until 1979. Lewis' bibliographer notes that after a recent census was taken, just 35 copies were extant, and two others known in dustjacket. Octavo (19.5cm); gray pictorial cloth; 275pp; illus. Spine slightly sunned, some soil to text edges, with rubbing to the extremities and cover decorations and minor pull to rear endpaper; a Very Good copy, housed in a custom clamshell case.
